Indian Heritage Centre will host the CultureFest during its opening month – featuring the iconic Natya Darpana dance and a Tamil theatre production by the award-winning Blacspice Media.
SINGAPORE: The Indian Heritage Centre will be officially opened to the public on Friday (May 8).
Along with it, the centre is hosting a cultural festival which ends on May 31, in celebration of Indian arts, culture and heritage.
The CultureFest will include the iconic Natya Darpana dance, which portrays the various Indian festivals celebrated in Singapore, like Thaipusam and Deepavali. It is the first time that Singapore’s leading Bharatanatyam dancers and choreographers are coming together for the original performance.
Another highlight is an hour-long Tamil theatre production called Vizhuthugal or The Roots. It is produced by Blacspice Media and promises to take the audience on a journey of nation building through traditional Tamil street theatre over three acts.
“The first act, which is about 1930s, will talk about early pioneers from India, how they came to Singapore,” said Blacspice Media director Saleem Hadi. “The second act is about 1950s, which is about Indians and their contributions in the areas of arts. The third one is making of a nation, which … would be apt if I were to talk about 2015. So I wanted to have all of these things together.”
Blacspice Media is the first Singapore company to have won the Cannes 2008 Distinguished Community Documentary Award for a short film, titled Take. It is about people living in Singapore and their take on death.
